My Grandfather

John Charles "J.C." was born to Charles and Zola (O'Berry) Eiland. He loved boxing and in his younger days won several titles in the state of Florida. He married Miss Carrie Louise Arrington on April 30, 1933 in Polk County, Florida. J.C. was of Pentecostal faith and Carrie had been raised as a Southern Baptist but she converted to the Pentecostal religion when she married J.C. and they attended church three to four times a week. When they were first married they lived in Polk County, Florida but moved to Brooksville, Florida in 1943; but that would not last long due to all the gossip about his parents forcing him to move his family to Tampa. He got a job loading, unloading, and delivering cinder blocks for Paul Swartz. He never missed a day of work in 40 years. Although there was a machine that could load the cinder blocks on the truck, J.C. could load the truck faster by hand. He had huge arms and was a very tall man. As a little girl, I remember he looked like a giant to me. J.C. enjoyed fishing, gardening, and camping when they were not at church. There lives mainly revolved around church. Together my grandparents had seven children, six living to adulthood. They were married nearly 62 years at the time of my grandmother's death in 1995.
