In 1872 he married #1 Eliza Moore in Louisville, Kentucky. She died in 1878 in Bismarck. Married #2 Louisa Kiesel on 27 March 1911 in Minnesota.


He enlisted in the 7th U.S. Cavalry on 27 March 1866 in Fort Riley, Kansas. At the time of the Battle of Little Big Horn he was in company K under Lt. Edward S. Godfrey. He was on detached service, remaining at Fort Abraham Lincoln, or would have very likely perished in the fight.
