Allen B. Lee, 93, of Chattanooga, TN passed away Thursday, February 11, 2010, at his home due to bad health.
He was born August 16, 1916 to Christian parents, Allen Franklin Lee and Mabel Blakemore Lee.
Allen got a pre-med degree and a chemical engineering degree at the University of Tennessee but spent most of his 93 years as a fisherman and reporter. He was on the docket on WRGP (one of the first television stations in Chattanooga, TN). He had the "Allen Lee Show" which came on right after the "Cisco Kid" went off. During and after that he had a radio show of the same name on WAPO, then WGOW and WDOD, reporting fishing and hunting in the tri-state area, as well as the Florida Keys, a place he dearly loved, as he "Knew" the "Back Country" as well as any resident guide. He built and repaired fishing tackle and did some gun smithing work. He was known as a "Mister Fix-it" and kept hunters, campers and fisherman happy with their equipment. He had his business at Darr's Hardware at 402 Dodson Avenue in Chattanooga, TN for 38 years and retired around 1985. He was a member of the Southern Outdoor Writers Association and of the Southern Outdoor Press Association for many years doing television and radio coverage for fishing and hunting activities. Allen was an avid fisherman himself and averaged at least one "trip to the pond" (Nick-a-jack Lake) per week. He loved to hunt the elusive quail and grouse and loved popping doves. Allen was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason of over 30 years. He was a former member of Forrest Avenue Methodist Church where his wonderful wife was the organist, choir director and minister of music for 31 years before her death in 1987. He was a current member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, William Allen Lee, of East Ridge, TN, an electrician at Norfolk Southern Corp. for 35 years; and a brother, John Lee of San Antonio, TX.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. J. David Tabor officiating.
Masonic services will follow in the funeral home chapel.
Burial will be in Chattanooga Memorial Park.
