He is born as Roelof van Dijken at the country village of Kantens in the northern part of the Dutch northeastern province Groningen. His parents are farmer Jan van Dijken, 27 years aged, and Hilje Wigboldus. Source: scan of his birthakte, 12/2012, P. Hakze. He is named for his maternal grandfather Roelf Popkes Wigboldus.

On 10 May 1892 Roelof VanDijken arrived at the age of 10 years with his father Jan, farmer and 36 years aged, his mother (37) and his siblings Piet (11), Jantje (8) and Aafke (7) on the SS Maasdam at New York.

In 1900 Ralph Vandyken, 18 years aged, lived with his father John (45, widower) and his siblings Peter (20), Jennie (17), Afke (15), Lena (14), Katrina (12), Poppe (9) and John (7, as first child born in Montana) at the former town Salesville (nowadays Gallatin Gateway), Gallatin County, in the southwestern part of Montana.

On 25 February 1909 Ralph Vandyken married at Manhattan, Gallatin County, at the age of 26 years to the four years younger Nellie [Pieterke] Alberda, who had Dutch parents too. In the beginning of 1910 Ralph Van Dyken, 28 y, lived with his wife Nellie, 23 y, who immigrated in 1893 from the Netherlands, at School District 52 of Gallatin County.

Nellie died on 24 June 1912 and Ralph remarried on 22 January 1913 to Sena C Kamerman, who became in July 1909 in Michigan, Ottawa County, Olive Township, widow of Peter Kraay, having two daughters of him, Esther (June 1905) and Pearl Grace Kraay (July 1909).
In 1920 Ralph Van Dyken, 37 y, lived with his wife Sena, 32 y, born in Michigan, in Gallatin County, Montana, together with their children Peter (9), John (7), Herman (5), and Paul Van Dyken (2), all born in Montana, and also the children from Sena's first marriage, Esther, 14 y, and Pearl Kraay, 10 y, both born in Michigan.
The couple lived in the beginning of 1930 in Gallatin County at the Dutch settlement Holland, later on called Amsterdam-Churchill, together with their children John (16 years aged), Herman (15), Paul (13), Pearl (20), Hilda (7) and Christine (4) Van Dyken.
Later on in 1930 Ralph's wife Sena Kamerman died at the age of about 43 years.
Ralph and his children lived in 1935 at Manhatten, Gallatin.
In 1940 widower and farmer Ralph Vandyken lived with his daughters Hilda and Christina, 17 and 14 years aged, in the state Washington, Whatcom County, at a rented farmhouse at Lynden Township, which had lot of people with Dutch roots.
He died there in August 1944 at the age of 62 years.
