Son of Wade Hampton and Charlotte Slatten. This surname is seen in multiple variations in records: Slaten, Slatton, etc.

His given names were WADE HAMPTON (Jr.), stone was cut from misread swoop written for the "P" in his given name on a pension application, as HAMILTON Slaton. See WikiTree profile https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Slatton-118.

His father Hampton Sr. can be traced from Hawkins co TN to Campbell co TN, Bradley co/Polk co TN, Dade co GA and DeKalb co AL. Wade Jr's census reports and military records suggest 1846 or '47 birth in Tennessee (but 1870 reports AL). A family bible, shown to the manager at a meeting with descendants Wade and Hobart Slatton, show his death date as 1888. He reported his age as 17 when he enlisted in April 1864.

Served 1st AL & TN Independent Vidette Cavalry (Union), then after unit mustered out, enlisted in Co G, 12th Tennessee Cavalry (Union) charged with desertion when unit was sent to Ft Leavenworth (much of the unit deserted), was later exonerated by letter, this is an early "G I" tombstone.
