Funeral service for John Roy Acker, 79, of Piedmont, will be Friday at 1 p.m. at Thompson Funeral Home and Crematory with the Rev. Tommy Ledbetter officiating. Burial will follow at Goshen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:30 - 8 tonight at the funeral home. Mr. Acker died Wednesday at Gadsden Regional Medical Center. Survivors include one daughter, Cathy Lanigan (Neale), of Goshen; one son, John T. Acker, of Eastaboga; five grandchildren, Lori Burt (Lee), Wade Singleton (Candace), Katie Winkles, Tyler Acker and Rebecca Williams (Dusty); four great-grandchildren, Riley Winkles, Dyani Burt, Aubrie Winkles and Wyatt Winkles; and two sisters, Betty Jordan, of Ellisville and Sue McCarley (Bill), of Piedmont. Pallbearers will be family and friends. Mr. Acker was a resident of the Piedmont area most of his life. He was a graduate of Spring Garden School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a member of Goshen United Methodist Church, retired from Liberty National Life Insurance Company and the United States Postal Service and enjoyed gardening and the outdoors.
