The following obituary was copied as it appeared in print in the Friday, October 11, 1901 edition of The Lampasas Leader. Contributed by FAG member Sue Lilley.
"Dr. J. N. Adkins, who was reported seriously ill last week, died Monday night at 9 o'clock. He had only been sick a short time, and it is supposed that he had contracted blood poison in waiting on another patient some two weeks since. All was done for him that faithful physicians and kind friends and relatives could do, but the power of the disease was too strong to be resisted by human skill. Dr. Adkins was in his sixty-eighth year, and had been a citizen for this immediate section for nearly 30 years. Dr. Adkins was skillful as a physician and was a friend to the poor, having, it is said, the largest charity practice at one time of any physician in this section. He was always ready to go to the call of distress and always did what he could for the relief of the afflicted, in many cases knowing that there could be no kind renumeration for his services. As a man he was known as a gentleman by his walk and demeanor, kind, obliging and alaways ready to render a favor to any one. He was a Christian, and frequently in former days conducted services at the Christian church. He leaves a disconsolate widow and some five children, three daughters, Mrs. Calla Wolf, Mrs. A. G. Walker and Miss Ettie Adkins. Two sons, Joe Adkins, now county judge of McCulloch county, and Wickliffe, a resident of Menard county. His body was tenderly laid to rest in the city cemetery Tuesday evening at 6 o'clock."
