Television Screenwriter, Producer, Director. He was a creative force behind such popular TV comedy series as "The Andy Griffith Show," "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C.," and "Sanford and Son." Born in Chicago to parents of Polish-Jewish descent, he studied at Lewis Institute (without graduating) and began his career in the Chicago Theatre, before his service in the United States Army during World War II. Following his return home, he worked in radio as a writer for such entertainers as George Burns, Gracie Allen and Henry Morgan. During the 1950s he made the transition to the small screen, as he wrote for "The Milton Berle Show" and "Caesar's Hour," directing episodes of "The Phil Silvers Show." Ruben co-wrote and co-produced with Carl Reiner the 1969 motion picture "The Comic," and earned an Emmy Award nomination for his efforts on the TV series "Sanford and Son." In later years he became an advocate for underprivileged children in the Los Angeles-area. He died from complications of pneumonia.
