She married James William Briggs on March 11, 1933, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The eldest of three children, she was always an independent person keeping fit her entire 90 years.
She was very athletic and was an excellent swimmer which helped her on one occasion when she had to rescue her father and brother when their boat capsized when she was around 17. Her nickname was "Tommy" since she was such a "tomboy". She kept that name all her life and all her friends and family called her by that name.
During World War II she got a job at the Budd Company riveting metal parts. She was the iconic female riveter of that time. When the war was over she did not want to return to a domestic role. She left her husband and moved to 5910 Green Street in Germantown where she lived until 1995.
Although she remained single after getting divorced, she had long term friendship with Eguidio Mesticelli. They started a construction business and were business partners. They constructed homes for the boom of the 1950's building market, and renovated an apartment building. She had many interesting stories relating times at work. She was a notary, secretary, and bookkeeper...graduating from business school after high school.
She was a member of the Germantown YMCA and swam every day in to her 70's.
After retirement she spent years traveling the world. She went to Egypt and the near East; a tour of Spain/Portugal on a cruise ; toured northern Europe.
She visited the Carribean several times, and Mexico.
She especially enjoyed Switzerland and wanted to move there at one point. She offered to take her nephew Earl Duff with her ( and said he could attend school there ) but his parents refused.
She then joined the "Elder Hostel" program and toured all over the United States with that group - always picking adventurous activity like hiking on mountains such as Pikes Peak.
She later settled down to home in Germantown but kept a permanent room at Chalfont-Haddon Hall in Atlantic City NJ and would spend every weekend at the hotel. As a "regular" resident of the hotel she met all the entertainment stars that entertained at the hotel and related stories of people like Sinatra, Ella Fizgerald, etc etc..
She often attended the horse races and enjoyed fishing..catching many trout that she shared with family.
She spent her last years of life living in the garage apartment of her nephew Earl Duff in Kimberton Pa. She became a well known neighbor of many in Kimberton and was often found having them visit with her.
She was seen by members of the family as an "Auntie Mame" type character.
