A native of Brantley County, he had lived in Pierce County most of his life. He was a retired school bus driver where he was affectionately known as "Papa Sloan."
He had also owned and operated the Sloan Saw Shop.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Blackshear where he was in the Men's Bible Class. A U.S. Army veteran, he was also a lifetime member of the VFW Post #4382. He was a former constable and deputy sheriff.
He was a son of the late Roma Eli Sloan and Ivy Mary Taylor Sloan.
Survivors include his wife, Leona Bailey Sloan of Blackshear; two daughters, Janelle Hickox of Blackshear and Connie Simmons of Waycross; five sons, Hubert W. Sloan Jr., Jerry Sloan (wife Doris), Tony Griffin (wife Michelle) all of Blackshear, Jimmy Sloan (wife Marion), of Wilson, NC and Robert Griffin (wife Glenda) of Douglas; a brother, Wilbert Sloan (wife Gertrude) of Blackshear; 23 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and several other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15, from the First Baptist Church of Blackshear with the Rev. O.J. Graham and the Rev. Dr. Bill Young officiating. Interment followed in the Blackshear Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to the building fund of the First Baptist Church of Blackshear.
