Helen May Gray the daughter of Frederick and Alice (Fisher) Sawyer was born July 6, 1927, at Ladysmith, Wisconsin. She died on Thursday, August 3, 2006, at Avera Holy Family Hospital in Estherville, Iowa at the age of 79.
She received her education in Estherville schools, graduating from Estherville High School. She also attended Estherville Junior College and Drake University.
On June 13, 1947, she was united in marriage to Robert Gray at the First Christian Church in Estherville. Helen taught 6th grade science and math for 24 years in Estherville. She retired from teaching in 1985.
Helen was a member of First Christian Church where she taught Sunday School, was a choir member, and an Elder. She was also a member of Wa-Tan-Ye, American Legion Auxiliary, Estherville Garden Club, Many Voices Choir, Oak Hill Cemetery Board, RSVP Board, and was on the Care-Review committee at Rosewood Manor.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Robert of Estherville; her children, Candace Anderson and her husband, Dale of Lewis, Iowa; Sandra Beck and her husband, Wayne of Centennial, Wyoming; Margaret Gray and Mary Gray both of Estherville; her sister, Virginia McCurdy of Grand Island, Nebraska; brother-in-law, Jim Gray of Estherville; sisters-in-law, Mary Strieb of San Diego, California; Kaye Sawyer of Elk Grove, California; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and also by several nieces and nephews.
Helen has been preceded in death by her parents; brother, Willard Sawyer; sisters, Lorraine Sawyer; Hilda Weede and her husband, Duff; brothers-in-law, John McCurdy and Dan Striebe.
