Founder, The Penland School of Crafts in Penland, Mitchell County, North Carolina. "Miss Lucy" was assisted by her Brother, Rev. Fr. Rufus Morgan in the school's development. A teacher at the nearby Appalachian School she had learned Weaving at Berea College in Kentucky. In 1923 Miss. Lucy began an association to provide income for the local women. The story is told in her book Gift from the Hills.
The Penland School is world renown for teaching ancient crafts, from quilting to wood working to blacksmithing. Each year more than 1,200 individuals travel from across the globe to learn Appalachian crafts at the Penland School.
