Not all of Clear Spring, Maryland's citizens were Unionists. Daniel Henry Winders enlisted in Co. C, 39th Battalion Virginia Cavalry (Robert E. Lee's bodyguards and couriers) on 2/10/1863 in Richmond, Va. A 5th sergeant with the company, he was present until sometime in May. Though military records reveal that he was a deserter, he was captured 5/1/1863, while going to see his mother. Held at Johnson's Island, Ohio, he died of typhoid fever and "general neglect" on May 1, 1864. His body arrived in Clear Spring, Maryland on May 18, 1864. He was buried on May 21, and, grieved for the death of her son, his mother, Susan, died one week later.
