Son of Robert Bailey Semple & Lucy Anne Shelton. He was a graduate of William Jewell College, Liberty, MO who continued his education at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis where he received his medical degree. He then did post graduate work at the University of Kiel, Germany 1900-01; & the University of Paris, 1902. He had an intense interest in diseases of the eye.
On 6 November 1909 he married Margery Ferriss & they had a son Robert Baylor Semple. Mrs. Semple was the daughter of Benjamin F. Ferriss who was a special examiner in the United States of America vs. Standard Oil Company of New Jersey etal. which led to the breakup of Standard Oil which was found in violation of the Sherman AntiTrust Law. They had a son, Robert Baylor.
