He was a career railway official, primarily with the Pennsylvania Railroad. He attended the Wharton School of Finance, University of Pennsylvania, for one year. His career in railway service began in 1902 when he joined the Pennsy at Germantown Junction, the next year transferring to the company headquarter offices at Philadelphia.
