The following is the eulogy delivered by Shawn's best friend, Dave McAdams, at his funeral mass June 10, 2006

Shawn Patrick McNeill – what a good soul from a great family.

Shawn touched so many lives. He inspired us; changed us; taught us compassion and dignity; and changed our definition of strength.

It was an honor to be his friend, and I was privileged to be one of many who took care of him. It was our finest hour.

ALS took his ability to move; it didn't take his spirit, his wit or his sense of humor. And it didn't take his faith in God.

I hope I do this story justice….while Shawn was at St. Mary's recently, a priest came in to pray for him, and said "well Shawn, I hope we won't be seeing you here again". Shawn respectfully told the priest, with that smile of his…… "Father, I'll be seeing the good Lord, before I'll come back here". …….The priest looked a little surprised at Shawn's honesty, but then he smiled too, and told Shawn "Ok then".

You always knew where you stood with Shawn.

I remember how his face used to get beet red when things weren't going well

Or the way he would pull the phone away from his ear and glare at the phone when he thought the person on the other end wasn't being completely honest

And then there was Shawn, the passionate, loving man, not afraid to share that love with family and friends…….

I read an article recently about the people in this area being so affectionate and unique in the way they greet people with hugs and kisses – most people just shake hands or wave.
I believe that Shawn had a lot to do with that. Because if you knew Shawn more than 10 minutes, especially if you were a female, you weren't getting out the room without him planting one on you!

Shawn could always be counted on to help others. Not just by tossing a dollar in a pot, but by giving of his time…..

Shawn gave years of support to the MS walks; he raised money for the fireman's fund after 9/11; he was the first to offer condolences, or just a sympathetic ear. He had a strong back, and helped a lot of people here move – some more than once. He even helped his chiropractor move.

We all have so many wonderful memories of Shawn, and fortunately, a lot of photographs to match. As Mary and I put Shawn's collage together, we soon forgot what ALS had done to his body, and this is how we will remember Shawn; how I know he wants to be remembered

Shawn will always be walking beside me – I'm your wingman.
