Elliott was educated in Columbia and Fairfield, South Carolina. She visited Texas in 1880 on a visit and later stayed to teach in Mineola and Dallas. She joined the faculty of Sam Houston Normal Institute (now State University) in 1881, teaching English until 1912 when she resigned and returned to her native South Carolina.
