An emotional saga for a Nixon family will come to an end when the body of their cousin Joann Cisneros Perez will be moved from a grave in Waller County to Nixon for proper burial.
Perez's body was discovered on March 18, 2007 in Prairie View, a small town 50 miles north of Houston. At that point in time, authorities could not identify her as her head had been shaved, her body hair had been cut, and her hands had been severed. It was speculated, though not proven, that this was done to prevent identification.
"Samples of DNA obtained from family members confirmed the positive identification of Ms. Perez," said Texas Ranger Brian Taylor. "We are currently working with other agencies on obtaining suspect information."
When Perez's body was found, authorities believed she had been deceased for approximately two hours. A plastic bag had been placed over her head and secured around her neck with duct tape. The ends of her arms were covered with the same type of plastic bag that was used to cover her head and were secured to her arms with duct tape. Her hands have not yet been found.
Information gathered at that time revealed that Perez had stretch marks indicating that she had possibly given birth, or lost a lot of weight due to starvation.
An autopsy revealed that Perez's hyoid bone, located just above the larynx, had been broken, resulting in strangulation. She was only 30 years old.
Perez remained unidentified for well over a year, and her unclaimed body remained in the Harris County Morgue throughout that time period. She was buried in a privately owned cemetery in Waller County on July 7, 2008.
Finally, in May of 2009, DNA evidence confirmed her identity. Why it has taken almost two years to exhume her body and return her to her hometown of Nixon is unknown at this time.
"I have reason to believe, though I'm not sure, that Waller County failed to submit the necessary paperwork to the State," said Cynthia Cisneros-Ramirez, Perez's cousin. "That could be the reason why this has taken so long."
There will be a graveside service for Perez at Rancho Cemetery in Nixon on May 7, 2011 at 10 a.m.
