Smith was a graduate Sam Houston Normal Institute (now State University) and the New England Conservatory of Music, studied at the University of Chicago, Cornell University, and Clark University, and received a master's degree from George Peabody College for Teachers.

After teaching stints in the Montgomery, Brownwood, Paris, and Huntsville districts, Smith was director of the music department at Texas Christian University at Waco. From 1914 to 1941 she taught geography at Sam Houston State Teachers College.

She had two sisters: Mary (1861-1954) and Emma (1868-1952).

A student residence (existing 1961-2012) was later named in her honor.
