Capt. Francis A. Adams was member of the Massachusetts Adams family that produced two presidents of the United States. He and his cousins, Pres. John Adams (1735 – 1826) and Pres. John Quincy Adams (1767 – 1848), were direct descendants of Henry Adams, the first of their Adams to arrive in Massachusetts.
Francis A. Adams was the son of John Quincy Adams (Oct 26, 1848- ) and Maria Adele (Negrin) Adams (Jan. 24, 1848- ).
He was a veteran of the Spanish American War and a member of the Sons of the American Revolution through Lt. Andrew Adams. His 1918 SAR application listed his residence as Long Beach, NY and his occupation as journalist.
After retiring to Stuart, Florida, in the late 1940s, he became a known for his super patriotism by wearing his Spanish American War uniform to parades and other civic functions.
He was a daily fixture at the Holiday Inn for breakfast. In his later years when he had to stop driving, he would hitchhike in his uniform from his apartment at the Atlantic Court to the Holiday Inn for his breakfast. He rewarded those who stopped for him with a "golden" railroad spike. The Stuart Police Department even instructed its patrolmen to give him a ride wherever he wanted to go.
On his 100th birthday, the Stuart city commission dedicated a small park at Confusion Corner to him.
In his later years he lived with a niece in Okeechobee.
