JOELLA CARPENTER
---Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon from the Baptist Church here at 2:00 for Mrs. Joella Carpenter who died at a hospital in Kirksville Friday. The services were conducted by Rev. Carl Schneider of the Atlanta Baptist Church. Burial was made in the La Plata cemetery.
---Joella Graves Carpenter, daughter of John Richard and Mary A. Graves, was born February 23, 1858, died February 4, 1938, aged seventy-nine years, eleven months and four days.
---She was married to John C. Carpenter March 13, 1878 and to this union three children were born, Anna Z. Hertzler, Elmer, Missouri, Wilbur G. Carpenter, La Plata, Missouri and Mrs. Nellie E. Shepherd of Sioux City, Iowa. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Susie Moore of St. Louis and three grandchildren, Laurence Hertzler, Atlanta, Missouri, Ester Hertzler of Kansas City and Leonard Shepherd of Sioux City, Iowa; one great-grandchild, Ann Hertzler, two aunts, Mrs. W. T. Gilbreath of La Plata and Mrs. Clark Gilbreath of Monte Vista, Colorado, other relatives and friends.
---She united with the Missionary Baptist Church at Chariton Grove very early in life and lived a good christian life until the end. She was so devoted to her family and was ever ready to help others in sickness or distress. She was never sick much in her life until she fell and broke her hip November 1 and was confined to the hospital until she died. She bore her sufferings well, never complaining of anything and always cheerful and had a smile for everyone who came to see her.
---She had lived her entire life in Macon County.
