Spivey was educated at Texas A&M and taught vocational agriculture in the Sherman Public School System. He moved to Huntsville in 1937 to assume the duties of dairy farm manager at Sam Houston State Teachers College. Later he became an associate professor and taught in the Agriculture Department. A student residence (built 1961) was later named in his honor.

Services for John R. Spivey were held at the First Methodist Church in Huntsville. Mr. Spivey attended school in Graham, Texas. He later taught school at Olney, Belleville, Masonic Home in Fort Worth, Bonham and Sherman before going to Huntsville.

He joined the college faculty in 1937 and was appointed manager of the College Dairy Farm in which capacity he served until his death. He was a gradute of Southwestern University and Texas A&M College. As manager of the dairy farm, the agriculture teacher aided many students, in received their advanced education. Professor Spivey took a personal interest in every boy employed at the farm and many of the students he associated with are now leaders in the field of vocational agriculture.

John Spivey married Miss Bessie Maberry of Reagan, Texas in 1926.

Survived by his wife; two daughters - Sue and Billie Jane Spivey; one son - John Spivey, Jr; four brothers - Gus, Thomas, Ward, William T. and Eddleman Spivey; one sister - Mrs. Emma Sue Huckabee.
