Susan was the daughter of Abimilec and Susannah (LNU) Pate. She was the sister of Elijah Pate, Anna Nancy Pate Loftin, Matilda Pate Fowler, Amy Pate Hardcastle, Joseph Pate, Mary Pate Owens Worcester, and Sarah Pate Smith.

Obituary
The subject of this sketch, Mrs. Susan B Hardcastle, (nee Pate) was born Feb 6th 1826, married to Eli Hardcastle, Feb 1841, moved with her husband from Alabama to Texas in 1848. Her husband died June, 1868.
She was the mother of 13 children; 12 of whom are married and most of them have large families, one son remained single until death. Her husband and two sons served in the Civil War, 1861 to 1865. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist church about sixty-five years, died in the triumph of a living Faith, March 17 1907, leaving eleven surviving children; 98 grand-children, 128 great-grand-children and 1 great-great-grand child. Her age was 81 years 1 month and 11 days. She was laid to rest in the Baptist cemetery on Black Creek, Medina Co. Texas, March 18 1907. The funeral was conducted by Eld. J.M. Wigington in the presence of a large assembly of weeping friends and relatives, text "Blessed are the dead which died in the Lord from henceforth, yes saith the spirit, that they may rest form their labour, and their works do follow them." Rev. 14,13. Her Children
