Elizabeth Berry, dau. of Nathaniel Berry & Elizabeth Philbrick, was b. at Portsmouth, NH circa 1700, in that part of Portsmouth formerly the Parish of Greenland, since 1721 the separate town of Greenland. She d. at Tolland, Conn. Mar. 8, 1728/9, Æ 29 (g.s.). Although both the original town record and her gravestone say she died in the singular year of 1728, the writer has adopted the view that the year of her death was actually 1728/9, as such date would have been written twenty-three years before the modern Gregorian calendar was finally adopted in 1752 by Great Britain.

Elizabeth m. on Jan. 31, 1720/1, prob. at Mansfield, Conn., but is only recorded at Tolland, Conn., to John Abbott. He was b. at Andover, Mass. Nov. 4, 1697 and d. at Tolland Nov. 25, 1779, Æ 83.

The original handwritten town record of Elizabeth's marriage, in the apparent handwriting of Shubael Stearns, the first town clerk who the record shows was a very poor phonetic speller, states:

"John abit was married to Elizabeth berye [i.e., Berie, Berry] on January the thirty first daye and in the yeare one thousand seven hundred and twenty; twenty one"

Unfortunately, Elizabeth's maiden name was incorrectly interpreted by someone as "Berge", which has become her errant surname in all genealogies concerning her since the error was made.

For the children of Elizabeth Berry, see her husband's memorial. For additional background, see the memorial of her father, Nathaniel Berry.
