Gordon Westley Dyer 1921 ~ 2010 Gordon Westley Dyer passed away January 11, 2010 at the age of 88. He was born on March 11, 1921 to Charles Enoch and Veda Olsen Dyer in Spokane, Washington. He grew up in Elmo, Utah in younger years. He graduated high school in Carbon County and also attended the college of Eastern Utah and University of Utah.
Shortly after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Gordon volunteered for the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, serving in New Guinea and Luzon in the Philippines with the 455th Air Service Squadron. He earned the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving as a High Priest. He enjoyed serving in many assignments, and particularly enjoyed coaching men's basketball in the Monument Park 3rd Ward. He made sure he donated to every family member and friend who served a mission.
Gordon and Elaine lived in Salt Lake City Monument Park Stake for 35 years. The neighborhood children knew him as Mr. Rogers. Gordon loved poetry and recited many for the children. Gordon was an avid reader. He and Elaine were world-wide travelers. He loved Rome, especially St. Peters Basilica.
Gordon worked as a diesel electric mechanic for General Motors Locomotive Division and also at Kennecott, where he was well liked by the men. He always worked for good purposes and didn't seek recognition for anything he did. He and Elaine have lived in Orem since 1978.
He is survived by his wife, of Orem. He was Uncle Gordon to many nieces and nephews who loved and respected him. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Donna Kofford.
The family expresses their genuine thanks and appreciation to the doctors and nurses of the UVRMC 7th floor and ICU; and to the professionals at Alpine Home Health-in particular Tara Snow and Jonathan Haws. All of you cared for Gordon and treated him so well.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 15, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Sharon 6th Ward Chapel, 545 South 800 East, Orem, Utah. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center on Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. or at the Ward Chapel on Friday from 9:30-10:45 a.m.
Interment, Spanish Fork City Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion Post 68.
