Miss. Cobb was the daughter of Rev. Needham Bryan Cobb and Martha Louisa Cobb. She was born in Lilesville, N.C. And began school at home under her eldest sister, Fanny Hooper Cobb. She studied at Peace University and St.Mary's School and graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1921. She received her M.A. in English at Chapel Hill in 1927, using as her thesis topic " A Collection of Ballads and Folk-songs from Eleven Eastern North Carolina counties".

Before graduating from Carolina, she had taught English had been city editor of the High Point "Enterprise", and had taught home economics for two years at Wilson Farm Life school and at Mills Home. She was county agent for two years in Cleveland and Duplin counties.

While in the university, she wrote her first published work, a one act play, "Gains and Gains Jr." Which was published in a volume of Carolina folk plays. Miss.Cobb has also written several short plays and poems.
