Deacon Edward "Bubba" Hunt, Sr. was born to the late George Thomas and Esther Eleanor Hunt, and was reared in rural area of Capron, VA and educated in the Southampton County Public Schools. After the death of his father at an early age, he quickly managed to learn many of the responsibilities associated with maintenance of the family farm.
Edward married his teenage sweetheart, the former Ethel Catherine Bates (deceased), and they relocated to Portsmouth, VA to pursue greater opportunities for their family. The marriage was wondrously blessed with seven children; four daughters and three sons.
Desiring always to work and provide for his family, Edward worked numerous jobs in his lifetime; including driver for Safeway Cab Company, one of the first African-American brakemen for Norfolk Southern Railroad, salesman for Electrolux Vacuum Company, owner of Craddock Upholstery, and retired as courier from Home Savings Bank in 1995.
For almost 60 years, Edward was an active member at Zion Bethel United Church of Christ; where his contributions and affiliations were immeasurable. He was always visible and dedicated to being a servant of the The Lord. In addition to being a leader of the Deacon board for many years, Edward was also a founding member of the Male Chorus; where he was a soloist for many of the church favorites; including "Peace Be Still", "Coward Soldiers", and "He Touched Me".
Edward enjoyed the liberation of outdoor life, was an avid hunter, and active and eldest member of the Vicksville Hunt Club for over 50 years. He especially looked forward to the opening of deer season, and evidence of his many trophies and hunts can be seen proudly displayed within his home.
All of these wonderful memories will be cherished by his family and friends. His legacy lives on through his four daughters; Brenda Hunt-Mills (Paul), Denise Pugh (William), Millicent Harding (Preston, Sr.), and Duana Hunt-Branch; and three sons; Edward Hunt, Jr. (Helen), Donovan Hunt, and Dion Hunt (Faye). He was also affectionately known as "Pop-Pop" by his sixteen grandchildren; JaNine and JaNina (reared as daughters), Sherae, Norman, Edrick, VaShane, Preston, Jr., Edward, III, Dennard, Elishia, Colby, DaSherra, Britney, Corey, Gerard, and Jordan; as well as by his twenty-three great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. His memory is further cherished by two special nephews, Amos Rawls, Jr., and Ronnie Rawls; a godson, LeRonnie Mason; one sister, Mildren McCowan; best friend, Emmitt Whitehead; two step-sisters, in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends.
