Roy passed away Sunday evening at Medical City Hospital in Dallas. Roy Douglas Crownover was born in Oklahoma and his family moved to Dallas when Roy was very young. His business career started delivering newspapers to residents in the Love Field area. His next business venture was when he was in high school, he delivered telegrams for Western Union in downtown Dallas on his bicycle. He then became an apprentice at Southwestern Engraving Company while attending high school at Crozier Tech High.
World War II was declared and he quit school and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served as a gunners mate on ship in the South Pacific. He was honorably discharged in February, 1946. He returned to Dallas and he and two of his former co-workers at S/W Engraving started a new business in the field of etching and they named it Texas Nameplate Company. Roy became sole owner in 1957.
Roy and Bernyce Ewing renewed the pre-war relationship and married on December 7, 1946.
Roy had managed the Texas Nameplate for years until his son, Dale, joined the Company after his college years. Dale is now President and CEO of the company. Roy has been continually involved in the company and until his illness was active in his favorite job of purchasing.
He always had a close relationship with each and all employees of Texas Nameplate. In 1959, Roy and Bernyce started another company, Identification Plates, Inc. in the field of awards and plaques for the trophy industry. Their son, Doug is now owner and CEO of the corporation.
