Hazel was born in Belpre, Ohio, eldest child of Thomas P. Heaton (1868-1897) and wife Minnie F. (Simpson) Heaton (1869-1898). Her parents moved to Parkersburg soon after she was born, but she tragically lost both of them before she was seven. Hazel and baby brother Bernie went first to stay with her Simpson grandparents in Ohio, then back to Parkersburg to live with her uncle William Simpson, a grocer. In Parkersburg she met a young tailor for the woolen mills, Mick Anderson, and they were married in Marietta, Ohio. In the 1920s they moved to Columbus, and made their home at 1385 Aberdeen Avenue.
