OBITUARY
Mrs. Peter Engstrom

Betsy Nelson was born in Ovanåker Socken, Hälsingland, Sweden, on Feb. 10, 1845 and died at the home of her son, Fred, near Stratford, Dec. 3, 1932. Her age was 87 years, 9 months, 23 days.

In 1867 she came to America and made her home at Bishop's Hill in Illinois. Here she was married to Peter Engstrom in the year 1869. Seven children were born to this union. They were Emma, Willie, Victor, John, Fred, Annie and Edward. Emma, Willie and Victor died in the course of one week during a diphtheria epidemic in 1878. Annie died 16 years ago and Mr. Engstrom died four years ago, Dec. 22.

In 1878 Mr. and Mrs. Engstrom with their family came to the South Marion community. Here they made their home and passed through all of the experiences common to the early pioneers. They entered into the various activities of community life.

Later they moved from this community to Hay Springs, Neb., where they lived for more than a decade. From Hay Springs they moved to El Campo, Texas where they resided until about eight years ago when they came back to Stratford. Since returning she made her home with her son, Fred.

Mrs. Engstrom was raised in the Lutheran faith in Sweden but when they settled in the South Marion community they became members of the South Marion Methodist Church. She was faithful to the church and her Christian faith was an anchor to her soul. While making her home with her son, Fred, she attended the Christian church when her health permitted. She was always very appreciative of this privilege and always thanked the minister for his message. She always greatly appreciated the reading of scripture and prayer. Her faith was unwavering and to her death meant going home.

She leaves to mourn her going three sons, John and Fred Engstrom, of Stratford, and Edward, of Texas; 15 grandchildren and three great grandchildren and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Dec. 5, from her son's home and at the South Marion M.E. Church. The funeral was conducted by Rev. C.F. Schmidt, of the Stanhope Christian Church and the music was supplied by a mixed quartet consisting of Dorothy Fisher, Mrs. J.A. Anderson, Clayton Kent and Carl Schmidt with Blanche Kent at the piano. The floral tributes were beautiful.
