George L. McLear, 72, of 75 El Camino Real, Port St. Lucie, Fla., formerly of Scotts Bridge, town of Fine, died Jan. 22 at his home. He had been in failing health for the past year.

Services were at Byrds Funeral Home, Port St. Lucie, and Mandziuk Funeral Home, Warren, Mich. Burial was in Croswell, Mich.


Surviving are his wife, Flora; two sons, a stepdaughter, three grandchildren; seven stepgrandsons; a step-great-granddaughter; three brothers, Robert, Star Lake, Joseph, Genoa, Ohio, and Gordon, San Antonio, Texas, and two sisters, Ella Bistrovich, Nedrow, and June Schaefer, Litchfield, Minn.

A brother, Alton, Pensacola, Fla., died in December.

He was born Nov. 7, 1918, in Morristown, son of Joseph and Lena McLear. The family lived at Gouverneur and Scotts Bridge.

Mr. McLear married Mary Ketterer of Louisville, Ky., in 1946. She died in May 1985. He later married Flora Tremblay Sulongski in September 1986, at St. Mark's Catholic Church, Warren, Mich.

Mr. McLear joined the Army at Potsdam in 1937. During World War II he was assigned to Australia, where he trained men to be mechanics. He also served in New Guinea, the Philippines, Okinawa and Germany, achieving the rank of master sergeant. Mr. McLear last served at Fort Knox, Ky., where he was in charge of the post saw mill. He retired after 22 1/2 years' service in the Army.

He was a member of American Legion Post 40, Fort Pierce, Fla., and a communicant of St. Lucie's Catholic Church.
