The second child born to Mary "Mollie" Payne Hawkins and Lewis Hawkins. Her mother Mollie died months after her birth so her paternal grandmother Sarah Jane Rue Hawkins took her in and raised her until she was twelve or so. Rachel was blind by the time she married the widower William Marvin Hodnett and had children. Together they had seven children: Thelma Loraine, Frances Lee, Dorothy Pauline, Harvey David, Marvin Wayne, Troy Alfred, and Janie Inez. Rachel had a love for animals that she passed on to son Harvey. She died in the hospital at Olney, Texas.

Rachel was loved by family and the community. To them she was known as "Big Mama". Her older brother Dan was called "Uncle Big'un" by all his nieces and nephews.

Rachel Lee Hawkins married William M. Hodnett on 31 December 1918 at Denton, Texas. The couple moved to Graham in 1941 from Jean, Texas.

Services for Mrs. William Hodnett, 60, were held at Salem Methodist Church officiated by Rev. John Allen, the pastor and Rev. W.M. Greenwaldt, pastor of First Methodist Church in Graham. She was a member of the Methodist Church.

Survived by three sons - Harvey D. Hodnett, Troy Alfred Hodnett, Marvin Wayne Hodnett; four daughters - Mrs. Loraine Peacock, Mrs. Frances Knowles, Mrs. Dorothy Baber, Janie Hodnett; four step-children - Ray Hodnett, Mrs. Pearl Young, Mrs. Lucille Crabtree, Mrs. Evelyn Englert; one brother - Dan Hawkins; three half-brothers - Dennis Hawkins, Edward Hawkins, W.O. Hawkins; four half-sisters - Mrs. Virgie Wright, Mrs. Mae Taylor, Mrs. Alma Beard, Mrs. Jane Marsh.
