Norma L. Boettcher (nee Norma L. Howe) passed away peacefully on February 5, 2007, at Our House Memory Care in Rice Lake at the age of 85.
She was born into a loving family of Norwegian heritage in Cumberland, Wis., on Aug. 2, 1921. She grew up on the family farm, and graduated from Cumberland High School in 1939, and from the University of Wisconsin at River Falls in 1943, where she earned her degree as a teacher. Norma devoted 37 years of her life to teaching in Spooner, Superior, Chippewa Falls, Dodgeville and Madison, Wis., before retiring in 1980. Most of these years were in the field of special education, enriching the lives of physically and mentally handicapped children.
Norma married then-Navy pilot and future coach, teacher and administrator, Orris C. Boettcher of Chippewa Falls on January 27, 1945. Before she passed away, they celebrated 62 years of marriage and raised three sons.
Norma is survived by her husband, Orris Boettcher of Shell Lake; three sons, Ronald (Deborah) Boettcher of Friendship, Tom (Karen) Boettcher of Highland Park, Ill., and Orrie (Joan) Boettcher of Hayward. Norma was the adoring grandmother of four grandsons, Brandon, Erick, Christopher and Michael; and two granddaughters, Carrie Fox (nee Boettcher) and Lindsay; and the great-grandmother of three great-granddaughters, Shyann Fox, Ciara Fox and Kaya; and one great-grandson, Samuel Fox. She will be remembered lovingly by them all.
Norma had a passion for playing golf, bridge and raising her three sons. She loved to sing, play the organ, complete crossword puzzles and, in her youth, was an accomplished flute player. Many happy summers were spent at the family cabin on Shell Lake. Holidays were never complete without lutefisk and lefse; and rarely could one leave her table without hearing 'clean your plate and it will be a nice day tomorrow.'
She was a member of many church congregations over the years, most recently the Shell Lake United Methodist Church, as well as belonging to a variety of educational and professional organizations.
Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Helmer S. and Mary M. Howe (nee Tyvol) of Cumberland; two brothers, Donald Howe of California and Robert Howe of Cumberland; and her sister, Doris Hartwig (nee Howe) of Shell Lake.
Our family would like to give a heartfelt thanks to everyone who helped make her final years, confronted with Alzheimer's disease, as comfortable and surrounded with love as possible.
