He participated in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Chicamaugua, Atlanta, and Peach Tree Creek. He married Sophia L. Stanber on November 24, 1864 in Iowa. They had six children:
