He enlisted in Company C, 42nd Indiana Infantry and was promoted to Second Lieutenant. He participated in the battles of Perryville, Stone River, Chattanooga, Mission Ridge, Lookout Mountain, Chicamaugua, Atlanta, and Peach Tree Creek. He married Sophia L. Stanber on November 24, 1864 in Iowa. They had six children:

Clara Hulda, died in 1905
Benjamin N., died at the age of 2 years
Cornelius L., of Stevens County, KS
Clement E., of Coffeyville, KS
Mrs. Tressie Sophia Stevens, of Meade, KS
D. Sylvester, of Meade, KS
