Vinal Stewart Aye's Obituary:
Vinal Stewart Aye was born near Marion, OH, May 20, 1839. He was the son of Henry and Mary James Aye.
The James family were Welch and were among the early settlers of our country. His grandmother James came to America in a sailing ship which took 3 months in making the voyage. When 14 years old, he became a helper to Dr Bricker of Hiland, near Hillsdale, IN, continuing in his home 8 years later.
On August 5, 1861, when 22, he enlisted as a volunteer and served until January 15, 1866, for a while filling another place as captain, and the last 6 months being a commissioned officer in that position.
At the close of the war, he located at Ash Grove, and on November 10, 1867, was united in marriage to Sarah Hayworth. Since their marriage, 54 years ago, they have made their home at the following places: Ash Grove, Hillsdale, IN, Chicago and Watseka.
The children of this home are Estella Longshore, Anne Dell (deceased), James H Aye, and Robert D Aye, and there are also 11 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
After a brief illness, the patient sufferer found the Father's loving Christmas was that blessed rest, which remaineth to the people of God, December 25, 1891.
O joyous Christmas morning,
That day so long since blessed,
My warfare now is over,
I have entered into rest.
Weep not my dear companion,
Mourn not, my loved ones true,
Within the Father's mansions,
There's a place of each of you.
Funeral services were held at Friends Church at 1 a.m. Tuesday, and internment at Oak Hill. The G.A.R. and W.R.C. attended in a body and the old soldiers fired a salute over the body of their dead comrade.
