Ray was born July 17, 1915, the son of Herman and Bessie Brim Boomgaarn, and raised on a farm northwest of Humboldt, Richardson County, Nebraska. He lived his life there, except for the time he spent serving his country in the Army during WWII. After graduating from Humboldt High School in 1934, he devoted his life to farming and caring for his parents and family. Ray was also a long distance truck driver. He loved all living things and was compassionate to others.

He was married to Velma Blecha Korber on January 1, 1974 at Humboldt, Nebraska. They made their home with his parents, and cared for them in their old age. After the death of his father, his mother moved to Chicago to live with her daughter.

Ray died Wednesday, September 25, 1985 in Lincoln, Nebraska after a long battle with cancer. He is survived by his wife, Velma; his mother, Bessie, of Chicago, Ill.; four step-sons, Albert, Charles, Melvin and Roy; two step-daughters, Mary and Luella; 18 step grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren; two sisters, Marie Voipe, Chicago, Ill. and Viola Bickel, of York, Penn. He was preceded in death by his father, Herman and one brother, Virgil.

Funeral services were held at the Wherry Chapel in Humboldt on Friday, September 27, 1986 at 10 o'clock a.m. with the Rev. Ward Merritt officiating.

Pallbearers were Norman Barker, Terry Barker, Marvin Chauza, Melvin Chauza, Michael Chauza and Roy Chauza.

Burial was in the Bohemian National Cemetery, southwest of Humboldt.
