It is said that Merritt was born in New Haven, CT but undetermined whether that is specifically the town or just the county of New Haven. Parents are as yet unknown.

The surname is ALLEN in some records. Spelling of given name varies (Thought to be Merritt, but gravestone has Meritt).

He was a farmer, and married about 1840 to Joanna Smith. They were the parents of five known children.
