Augustus Caesar Bailey was born on 14 Nov 1835 in Park, Indiana. He was the son of Doctor Gideon Smith Bailey and Julia Manwaring. Augustus was for a time a newspaper publisher in Vernon & Albia, Iowa, and apparently moved the printing press, that his father purchased for him, to Lancaster, Missouri where he used it in a print shop. He was also an attorney, a justice of the peace for a time in Lancaster, and at least during the winter of 1890-91 did janitorial work at a local school assisted by his son Raymond. Elizabeth Virginia Knott and Augustus were married on January 29, 1865 in Memphis, Scotland, Missouri. She was the daughter of Samuel Clellean Knott and Sarah Gates. To this union ten children were born. Elizabeth was born on 13 Jun 1848 in Breckenridge, Kentucky. She died on July 18, 1933 at the age of 85 in Lancaster, Schuyler, Missouri due to a fall sustained on Mother’s Day.
