Lyle DeLauder Chapline, Jr. was born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 18, 1919. He was the son of Lyle D. Chapline, Sr. and Catherine Manning Chapline. Lyle grew up in Baltimore and was the eldest of eight children. Prior to World War II Lyle worked as a machinist at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Company. Lyle entered the U.S. Navy and was stationed at the Naval Air Station in Jacksonville, Florida. While there Lyle met Bonnie Wise. Lyle and Bonnie married on September 28, 1946. The couple lived in Baltimore for the first year or so of their marriage but relocated to Jacksonville around 1948.

Lyle worked as a civil service employee at the Naval Air Station for many years. He was a Tool and Die Maker for the O&R and later became a Planner and Estimator for the Naval Air Rework Facility (NARF). The Chaplines raised a daughter and a son. Their home was at 2813 Forest Circle on a high bluff overlooking the St. Johns River. Lyle was a charter member of the Mandarin Presbyterian Church. Lyle passed away at home on July 26, 1996 surrounded by his wife and children. Lyle and Bonnie had five grandchildren.
