Lowell C. Allen Dies Suddenly- County Treasurer Nominee Passes Away While Sitting at Dinner Table at New Albany Home.-
Many Bradford County people were shocked and saddened yesterday when they heard of the very sudden death of Lowell C. Allen, Republican candidate for the office of county treasurer, which occurred at his home at New Albany yesterday. After working in his store during the morning he went home at noon for his dinner and death overtook him before he left the table, the cause being heart failure.
During the recent primary election Mr. Allen conducted a strenuous campaign and was to all appearances in the best of health. His family and several of his close friends, however, knew that he had been suffering from a heart ailment for the past few years, but even they did not think that death was so imminent.
He was born in Albany township on November 14, 1869. After leaving school he was a teacher for a few years and worked on his father's farm. Thirty-six years ago he entered the hardware business in New Albany and has been in it ever since as a member of the firm of Corson and Allen.
In 1908 when the First National Bank of New Albany was chartered he became its first president and held the office until his death. He took a leading part in all the activities in his community being a member of the First Baptist Church and president of the board of trustees for the past eight years. He was also a member of the New Albany Grange and the New Albany Lodge of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and of the Sons of Veterans organization.
He was also prominent in the affairs of Evergreen Lodge No. 163 Free and Accepted Masons of Monroeton having served as Worshipful Master and trustee. His other Masonic affiliations were: Union Chapter Royal Arch Masons, of Towanda, Northern Commandery of Knights Templar, of Towanda, Scottish Rite Bodies 14th, 16th and 18th degrees at Towanda and Williamsport Consistory 32nd degree and Irem Temple of the Mystic Shrine at Wilkes-Barre.
Mr. Allen was married twice, is first wife being Miss Minnie VanLoon who died in 1916. Their children, all of whom survive their father, are Carlton Allen of Rochester, N. Y., Vernon Allen, of Sherrill, N. Y., Mrs. Leila Long, of Dushore, Herman Allen of Endicott, and Miss Mildred Allen, at home. In 1918 he married Ruth Corson Silvara, who survives him. He is also survived by four brothers and one sister as follows: Ed Allen of Albany township, Melville Allen, Endicott, N. Y., Theron Allen, Albany township, Warren Allen, Spencer, N. Y., and Mrs. William Lenox of Albany township. His aged father, John Allen, a Civil War veteran, of Albany township also survives him as does three grandchildren, Lowell, Raymond and Phyllis, of Sherrill, N. Y.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday afternoon, October 1, at 2 o'clock at the Baptist Church at New Albany with Rev. William Schlessman, pastor of the church officiating. Burial will be in the New Albany cemetery.

Large Funeral for L. C. Allen- Hundreds Unable to Get Inside Church to Hear Service. -
One of the largest funerals ever held in Bradford county took place at New Albany yesterday when Lowell C. Allen, who died suddenly last Monday after having won the Republican nomination for the office of county treasurer in the recent primary election, was laid at rest. Services were held in the Baptist church where every available seat was occupied and extra chairs placed in the aisles, but hundreds were unable to get inside.
Estimates of the number present varied from 800 to 1,000. Mr. Allen's wide circle of friends in fraternal, political and business circles attended in large numbers making the event most impressive. Upwards of 200 Free Masons from all sections of the county and also from Sullivan county attended in a body, and a large contingent of Odd Fellows was also present. Services in the church were conducted by the pastor, Rev. William Schlessmann, and at the grave members of Evergreen Lodge No. 163, Free and Accepted Masons, of Monroeton, had charge. Walter J. Lilley, past Worshipful Master acted as master, and Rev. W. H. Fahr of Dushore, as chaplain. At the close of the ceremony all the Free Masons present laid a sprig of evergreen on the casket as they bid a last farewell to their deceased brother.
The pallbearers were T. A. Kelder, Carl D. Wilcox, Joel R. Horton, C. E. Osthaus, Henry Bahl and B. F. Crossley, all of whom, with the exception of the latter, are connected either as directors or cashiers, with the First National Bank of New Albany, of which Mr. Allen was president. Mr. Crossley is the cashier of the First National Bank of Dushore.
