Owned and operated Van's Cafe in Brainerd, MN. Originally came to Brainerd to manage the local Woolworth's store.

Oconto county birth record shows 1891, not 1894. My father, the informant for the death record, didn't know how old his dad was. :-/

     J. S. Allen, overseer of the Woolworth stores, was in the city and inspected the local branch of which C. VanEssen is manager. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 27 March 1916, p. 2, c. 3)

Clarence Van Essen, head of the Woolworth store in Brainerd, leaves Sunday for a week's stay in Minot, N. D., where on Monday he will assist in opening a Woolworth store there. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 17 June 1916, p. 2, c. 3)

Clarence Van Essen returned today from Minot, N. D., where he assisted to establish a new Woolworth store. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 26 June 1916, p. 2, c. 3)

Clarence Van Essen likes the ladies and we will venture to say that the fair ones reciprocate. However, when in their presence he often loses control of his vocal chords [sic]. On a recent evening, while a guest at a fair one's home, his voice governor failed to work, and he was politely requested by the next-door neighbor to calm his voice so that others might sleep in the vicinity. "And I was only whispering lackadaisically," said the human fog horn.
His friends, ever helpful, are assisting him in a search for a 1916 model voice governor, so that similar experiences might be avoided in the future. Some have suggested a Ford shock absorber. (Brainerd Daily Dispatch, 07 August 1916, p. 5, c. 1)
