CUMBERLAND,MARYLAND — Howard "Dutch" Harden Peterson, 79, of Cumberland, died Saturday, March 1, 2008, at his residence.
Born Feb. 21, 1929, in Orbisonia, Pa., he was the son of the late Roy Ray and Thelma Ruth (Ulsh) Peterson. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Pauline Grant.
Mr. Peterson was a retired mechanical engineer for the Kelly-Springfield Tire Company in the Plant Engineering Department. He was a U.S. Marines veteran of the Korean Conflict and a 1947 graduate of Allegany High School. He received a bachelor of science degree in engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He was a State of Maryland Registered Engineer, a past member of the Cumberland Outdoor Club, Cumberland Elks, and a member of Grace Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Rosemary Catherine (Everstine) Peterson; two sons, Michael R. Peterson and wife Elayne, Waterford, Conn., Kevin H. Peterson and wife Lisa, Cumberland; two daughters, Patricia A. Calhoon and husband Charles, Newark, Del., Jennifer L. Tasker and husband George, Fountain, W.Va.; one brother, Richard D. Peterson and wife Sandra, Ridgeley, W.Va.; 12 grandchildren, Stephanie, Kimberly, Zachary, Sarah, Rachel, Daniel, Brian, Carly, Michael, Jack, Aaron and Katie.
Friends will be received at the Scarpelli Funeral Home, P.A., 108 Virginia Ave., Cumberland, scarpellifh.com on Monday from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
A memorial service will be held on Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Kennedy officiating.
At Mr. Peterson's request, his body was donated to the Maryland Anatomical Board.
Inurnment will be in the Maryland State Veterans Cemetery at Rocky Gap, Flintstone, at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Lung Association.
