Gertrude attended elementary schools in Ludlow Falls, Cincinnati and Glencoe, Ohio, and graduated from Muskingum Academy, the preparatory department of Muskingum Colllege in New Concord, Ohio.
While in grade school in Cincinnati, she had the honor of presenting flowers to President Woodrow Wilson when he visited the school.
She attended Ohio State University for two years where she became a member of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority.
She had to drop out of OSU because of the Depression. Her brother was also in college at Ohio University in Athens and her father said he only could only afford to pay for one of them. So as things were in that time, she had to defer to her brother.
She then went to beauty school in Wheeling, West Virginia and followed a sorority sister Edith May (Miller) Simpson to Boston to look for work. She soon found a job in a beauty shop and was introduced by her employer to her future husband, George Calvert, who was an usher at her church.
They became engaged on Easter Sunday 1933 and were married by the Rev. William E. Gardner of the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts on August 19, 1933 at her home, The Cairns, 288 Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.
After their marriage they lived in Belmont and then Brookline until they built a house at 65 Colburn Street in Westwood, Mass. In the early 1940s they sold that house in order to be closer to at his work at Raytheon Mfg. Co, in Waltham and they rented in Newton Highlands for a while until they found a house to buy in West Newton (197 Mount Vernon Street}, where they lived until 1952.
She was a stay at home mother until the late 1940s when she and her husband and a partner opened a sandwich catering business which daily supplied drug store lunch counters in west suburban Boston.
She and her family moved to Manatee County, Florida, in August 1952, living first in Bradenton Beach, then Holmes Beach and finally Bradenton. After a few years she went back to work as a hairdresser and opened her own shop in Bradenton, took advanced hairstyling from Robert Fiance in Manhattan, New York, and managed a shop during the summers at Chautauqua, New York.
In 1975, she and her husband moved to Stuart, Florida, where their youngest son lived. After her husband's death in 1976, she went to work in her son's office and worked there the rest of her life.
She was the Clerk of Christian Science churches in Newton, MA, Bradenton and Stuart, FL., and was the Second Reader at First Church of Christ, Scientist, Bradenton.
She died at home, 578 Palm Beach Road, Stuart, FL.
Her ashes were interred in a private family graveside service at All Saints Cemetery attended only by two of her sons. Her other son Bill had been unable to travel from Boston due to illness..
