John was a son of George Locke and Ann McCrery. He married Elizabeth Bass about 1834 in Stewart County TN. This couple had ten known children: Amanda Elizabeth, Francis, Mary Ann, Rufus C., James, John H., Nancy Elizabeth, Louisa Jane, Sally Margaret, and George Washington.

1850 Stewart Co., TN, pg 391: John Locke, 40, NC; Elisabeth, 39, NC; Frances, 13, NC; Amanda, 13, NC; Mary, 11, TN; Rufus, 9, TN; John, 5, TN; Nancy, 3, TN.

Tradition says that John was a school teacher who was living in Missouri at the outbreak of the Civil War. He and family moved south to escape the conditions that existed in Missouri. The family settled in Fannin County TX.

John probably died prior to 1865 since his wife appears on Fannin county tax rolls from 1865 to 1880. His wife Elizabeth is shown as a widow in the 1870 and 1880 Fannin census. The date of John's death is not known. Sources say he is buried in Porter Cemetery, Whitewright, Fannin County. This burial cannot be documented.
