HANS, ERNESTINE and FAMILY in front of their newly rebuilt Hotel and Saloon in Eldridge, Iowa, 1905. At the top of the facade is imbossed "1904 H.A.DENKER". The location was in the 100 block of Franklin Street
The original hotel burned down in 1904 under mysterious circumstances. The family always suspected arson, but records show it started in Wiese Hardware and Machinery nearby.
Some folks thought it looked like part of it was still standing as "Dell's Bar" in 2012, and that it burned in 2013, but that turned out to be a bar in the old Turner Hall on LeClaire Road, not this hotel.
We do not know when the building was torn down, but believe that in 2013 it is occupied by large grain elevators on the SW corner of 1st and Franklin. Originally it was next to the railroad tracks and across the street from what was Hans Denker's Livestock Exchange in 1894 and later.
In 1947 it was still operated as a family style restaurant and appeared much as it is in this photo with the name and date at the top.
The photo was on a stiff fibre card and had cracked. The photo was restored in 2011 by a volunteer, Thomas Henning, for Hans' Grandson, Fay Schlotfeldt,son of Selma, youngest in this photo.

This is a page from the 1971 Eldridge, Iowa Centennial book that contained pictures submitted by the families. The Denker Hotel picture is similar to one from 1905 we posted earlier, but with the family in different doorways. The interior photo of the Saloon shows Hans' son Bill tending bar. I believe it is circa 1915. We had another that we gave to the Wiese family there which also showed son Ray tending bar.
(Much older than in the 1905 Hotel picture, but still showing the potbelly stove.

March 8, 1881.Passenger list. HANS ASMUS DENKER Age 24 and his brother arrive from Hamburg to begin their new live in Iowa. SHIP GELLERT. Hans parents and sister would come later.

when Hans and his brother, Claus, return from a trip to Germany following the death of Hans'wife Ernestine.

East side of Denker/Sievert family stone.
Stone has several names on the West, North and East sides; in addition, the name Sievert appears on the North side. Except for the "Sievert", the North, and East, sides are very degraded. It appears there were more names on the South side, but they have totally eroded.
Though it is hard to read, even in person, I believe that Hans A is at the top of the East side. You can also barely make out the last name on the stone, which appears to be Cummings - a wife's nee perhaps? Again, it is hard to be sure.
No other Denker or Sievert stones were located in either of my complete walkabouts.
