MARCUS FEDER SR., FOUNDER OF HEBREW FREE LOAN ASSOCIATION. DIES AT 89
Marcus Feder, Sr., 1779 Cadwell Avenue, founder of the Hebrew Free Loan Association and a leader in many philanthropies, passed away on Saturday, July 25 after an illness of two months.
Mr. Feder came to the United States at the age of seventeen from Posen, then in East Prussia, where he was born and came to Cleveland in 1880, when he and his late brother, Emanuel, established the Feder Bros. Co., which was known as the largest tobacco jobbing house in Cleveland. Later he operated the Marcus Feder Cigar Co., and the London Whiffs Cigar Co. Originator of the first successful American cigaret, Mr. Feder was often referred to as "the father of the American cigaret."
Mr. Feder was the last surviving member of the first board of directors of the Temple. He was eighty-nine years of age. He was the founder of the Russian Refugee Society and through this establishment gave employment in his cigar business to these refugees.
Surviving Mr. Feder are his sons, Lloyd H., and Marcus Feder, Jr.; two daughters, Marguerite Feder and Mrs. Rosalia Sarbey; a sister, Mrs. Mollie Bloch, and six grandchildren. Rabbi A. H. Silver conducted the funeral services at the Cleveland Temple Memorial Home on Tuesday, July 28. Interment was at Mayfield Cemetery. Active pallbearers were: George Furth, Saul Feigenbaum, W. R. Thomas, William Lynn, Dr. Samuel B. Cowan, Louis Feder, Ernest S. Dowd. Honorary pallbearers were: Nelson Fairlamb, Harry Arnstine, Ben Lowenstein, George Mehlek, Ike Preeman, Dave Prentke, Phil Sicherman, Gus Widusky, Morris Keller, Morris Arnold, Philip Arnold, Martin Blum, Alexander Buchman, Albert Cornsweet, Sidney Eisenberg, E.
