Henry Ripley Door, 45, of Rutland, died of meningitis Thursday in Kansas City, Missouri. He was the son of Seneca N. and Julia C.R. Dorr. He graduated from the Rutland high school in 1876 and from Middlebury College four years later. He inherited some of his mother's poetic talent and was class poet at his graduation, president of his class, and editor of the college magazine, The Undergraduate.
For several years his efforts were devoted to literary work, largely in verse, and he held positions on the editorial staffs of the Springfield Republican and the Boston Herald. After the death of his father in 1885, he came to Rutland and with his brother, W.R. Dorr, and his brother-in-law, W. H. Steele, established the banking investment firm of S. M. Dorr's Sons, with a branch in Bristol. This concern went down in the financial panic of 1893.
Mr. Dorr enlisted as a private in Company A of Rutland when the war between the US and Spain was declared in 1898 and was with his regiment at Chickamauga. Soon after his return to Rutland he was elected captain of the Company, but resigned that position after a short time. In recent years, he had been engaged in the promotion of an invention for utilizing the immense quantities of coal dust which have heretofore remained unused in the Pennsylvania coal regions. He received several patents and organized the International Fuel Company, of which he was president.
He is survived by his wife Janet Ripley Dorr and son Thomas Ripley Dorr.
