3.) Biography. Mary Elizabeth was born in Bristol England, per her headstone. She married John Charles Bassett, and lived as a young adult in the town of John's birth, Llanelli, Wales. Her father was William Jones.

Mary Elizabeth and John Charles had converted to Mormonism while in Wales. They joined the historic Welsh immigration to the United States. On April 19, 1856, with their fellow Saints, the family sailed on the Samuel Curling. They had their first three children in Wales, which meant that the extreme discomfort of immigration was magnified by traveling with little ones. Through faith, severe hardship, and determination, all but infant Hyrum survived crossing the Atlantic.

Her family then joined the 353 individuals and 59 wagons of the James S. Brown Handcart Company when it began its journey from the outfitting post at Florence, Nebraska (now Omaha). They pulled a handcart filled with their earthly possessions and goods across America's Great Plains. Zion was their goal--the Kingdom of God on Earth--Salt Lake City.

Once there, the family became disillusioned with their decision and moved back to what was then the edge of the West--Council Bluffs, Iowa. They joined a people who also left the Mormon church and organized themselves into The Reorganized Latter Day Saint church.
