Jerry, the son of Wendall and Wilma N. Steward, of Springfield VA, enlisted in the US Marine Corps on October 7, 1969 in Baltimore MD. He arrived in Vietnam on May 14, 1970 and was assigned to Company G, 2d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.
On September 11, during Operation Imperial Lake, Marines of the 2d Battalion were sweeping the eastern slope of Hill 845 in Duy Xuyen District; suddenly the patrol was hit with several rounds of enemy sniper fire. PFC Steward was wounded by the enemy gunfire and evacuated on the first available helicopter. Because of the seriousness of his wounds he was transferred from the Station Hospital NSA in Da Nang to the USN Hospital in Guam where he died of his injuries.
* PFC Steward was the last casualty for the Regiment during the ground action for the Vietnam War; all personnel were transferred to other units or left the country by mid October 1970.
Since the war, there have been five Marines from the Regiment who names have been inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial Wall post-Vietnam because their cause of death was attributed directly to the wounds they had sustained in Combat.
These men are:
PFC Donald Gerald Bailey, wounded August 28, 1969 died January 11, 1972.
Cpl John Frederick Anthony, wounded January 31, 1967 died February 6, 1982.
GySgt Enrique Valdez, wounded August 26, 1969 died February 4, 1994.
LCpl George Bryant Givens Jr. wounded March 22, 1966 died December 18, 1994.
Cpl Frank Anthony Neary wounded February 24, 1967 died
November 22, 2006.
