Civil War Veteran Dies Here –
Funeral To Be Sunday

John T. Bennett, a Civil War veteran, expired yesterday afternoon at 6:45 o'clock at his home, 818 North Jameson street, at the age of 77 years, 10 months, 8 days. Death was caused by a complication of diseases. He had been ill fourteen weeks.

Deceased was born August 6, 1845 in Pike, Boone county. On August 23, 1866, he married in Boone county to Sarah Beach, who survives. Seven children, Mrs. A. G. Espinosa of San Francisco, Cal.; Mrs. J. E. Blackburn of Oakland, Cal.; O. C. Bennett of Bloomington; Homer C. Bennett of Midland; Bessie Meyers of Marvel, Ark.; and Mrs. Walter Steiert of Chicago are living. A daughter, Mrs. George Meinzer of Chicago, died two years ago. A son, John Bennett, died 15 years ago and one son died in infancy. A brother, Marion Bennett of Quincy and a sister, Elizabeth Cory of Bloomington, also survive.

Mr. Bennett was a member of the Rich Mountain Post, G. A. R., here, and of the Red Men Order at Indianapolis.

Deceased had resided in Iowa, Kansas, Indianapolis and Bloomington for a number of years but for the past four years had made his home in Lebanon. During the Civil War he was a member of Co. F, Regiment 40, Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

Dead at Lebanon

Age 79, a Soldier of the 40th Indiana
During the Civil War,
and a Former Business Man of this City
- The Local Relatives.

Word was received this morning of the death Thursday of John P. Bennett, who for many years was a resident of Bloomington and who the older generation of people here will remember as proprietor of a meat market on North Walnut street. Mr. Bennett moved away from Bloomington 28 years ago and since that time had been living in Lebanon. He was A member of the 40th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War and was highly respected among his acquaintances and the old soldiers. He was a grandfather of Mrs. Paul Bryant, who is prevented from attending the funeral on account of a sick child. He was also the father of George Bennett, north of town, and a brother of Mrs. John Croy, west of the city.

Mr. Bennett was 79 years of age, was a member of the Methodist church, the Grand Army of the Republic and the Red Men. He is survived by several children, among them Homer Bennett, of Midland; Bessie Bennett, of Arkansas; Mrs. Hazel Sourers, of Chicago; Mrs. Leafy Hobson, of Greensboro, Ala.; Mrs. Elva Benashell, of Los Angeles; Mrs. Lizzie Blackwell, of Oakland, Calif.; Otha Bennett, of this city.

George Bennett has gone to Lebanon to attend the funeral of his father. The funeral details are not known here.
